In 1977, Jake Burton had the crazy idea that sliding downhill while standing sideways on a fat ski could become a major winter sport and means of making a living. With his company, Burton Snowboards, that’s just what has happened. Snowboarding is Vermont’s own homegrown sport, having been developed here, and having first gained acceptance at Green Mountain ski areas such as Stratton.

In the U.S., nearly all ski areas allow and encourage snowboarding, and competitions like the U.S. Open held at Stratton Mountain attract crowds of spectators. Through it all, Burton has been committed to a single ethic: to build the very best snowboards, snowboarding equipment, soft goods, and nothing else. Perhaps this is why Burton has grown to become a global enterprise and the largest manufacturer of snowboards in the world. We are proud of our facility in Burlington and of our roots, which run deep here in Vermont.
