Registered Apprenticeship Relationship between an employer and employee in which the worker, the apprentice, learns an occupation in a structured program consisting of supervised on-the-job training and related theoretical classroom instruction.
Student Apprenticeship Student Apprenticeship is typically a multi-year program that combines school- and work-based learning in a specific occupational area or occupational cluster and is designed to lead directly into either a related post-secondary program, entry-level job, or registered apprenticeship program.
Capstone Project An in-depth project focused on a topic of the students choice, generally carried out over a semester or a year, and generally including applied learning, community interaction and both written and oral presentation.
Career Fairs Special events which bring together a wide range of employers representing many different types of occupations and highlight non-traditional fields.
Career Guest Speakers/Presentations Professionals provide presentations on specific careers and/or fields of study to students in a school setting, highlighting typical preparation paths and personal satisfactions and challenges.
Career and Personal Interest Inventories
A process which provides students with an awareness of how well their personalities, interests and abilities may be suited to a specific career.
Career Plans and Portfolios (Student Development Portfolio) A collection of works that documents a students educational performance, personal development and career readiness over time.
Cooperative Vocational Education Students and participating businesses develop written training and evaluation plans to guide instruction, and students receive course credit for both their classroom and work experiences.
Educational Visit/Tour A class visit to a specific learning environment to expose students to new occupations/careers.
Employability Competencies Designed to include ten competencies all relating to job readiness, such as job-seeking skills, the application process, resume preparation, the interview process, work values, and sources of employment.
Employer/Teacher Internship An opportunity for educators to experience the world of business through an extended, paid learning experience, and to apply what they learn to how they teach. |
Entrepreneurship
a. School-Sponsored Enterprise
An enterprise in which students produce goods or services as part of their academic program, giving them an opportunity to develop business skills and apply basic content knowledge.
b. Student Enterprise
An activity in which students learn how to become business owners and operators. Students connect with community resources to develop and implement viable business plans.
Internship (Student) Situations where students work with an employer for a specified period of time to learn about a particular industry or occupation.
Job Shadowing An experience where a student follows an employer in the workplace for a short period of time to learn about a particular occupation or industry. This activity helps students explore the world of work and the range of opportunities found within an occupational area.
Mentoring
a. School Site
An ongoing one-on-one relationship where a professional is designated as an advocate who offers encouragement and support to a student in order to help develop the students interests, abilities and talents.
b. Workplace Mentor
An employee or other individual, approved by the employer at a workplace, who possesses the skills and knowledge to be mastered by a student, and who instructs and critiques the performance of the student, and challenges the student to perform well.
Paid Work-Based Learning A paid work experience that involves specific, mutual goal setting and joint, ongoing assessment by the employer, school and student.
Service Learning A structured community service experience designed to balance a students need to learn with a recipients needs. This activity also offers a structured opportunity for reflection and emphasizes the links between the service and academic learning.
Skill Certificate A portable, industry-recognized credential that certifies the holder has demonstrated competency on a core set of content and performance standards related to an occupational cluster area.
Supported Employment Employer-paid positions for differently-abled students. Ongoing supports typically include job development, job training and follow-up services.
Tech Prep (Articulated Career Preparation) Programs that offer at least four years of sequential course work at the secondary and post-secondary levels to prepare students for technical careers.
Unpaid Work-Based Learning An opportunity for students to learn about a particular occupation or industry by working with a particular employer for a specified amount of time (longer than job shadowing). |
