A study of Big Brothers Big Sisters by Public Private Ventures found that youth who participated in mentoring programs were:

  • 46% less likely than their peers to begin using illegal drugs.
  • 26% less like than their peers to begin drinking alcohol.
  • 52% less likely to skip school.

A two-year Big Brothers Big Sisters study from 1997-1999 of school-based mentoring programs found the following:

  • 64% developed higher levels of self-confidence.
  • 58% achieved higher grades in social studies, languages, and math.
  • 64 % of participating students developed more positive attitude towards schools.
  • 62% were more likely to trust their teachers.
  • 55% were better able to express their feelings.

 Mentors: Adults who participate in school-based mentoring programs also enjoy significant benefits.
They are likely to:

  • Return to work happy after meeting with their mentee.
  • Develop relationships with a local school/school district.
  • Learn about the issues facing today's youth.
  • Develop a meaningful relationship and lifelong friendship with a young person.
  • Feel good about making a difference in the life of a student.
