- 46% less likely than their peers to begin using illegal drugs.
- 26% less like than their peers to begin drinking alcohol.
- 52% less likely to skip school.
A two-year Big Brothers Big Sisters study from 1997-1999 of school-based mentoring programs found the following:
- 64% developed higher levels of self-confidence.
- 58% achieved higher grades in social studies, languages, and math.
- 64 % of participating students developed more positive attitude towards schools.
- 62% were more likely to trust their teachers.
- 55% were better able to express their feelings.
Mentors: Adults who participate in school-based mentoring programs also enjoy significant benefits.
They are likely to:
- Return to work happy after meeting with their mentee.
- Develop relationships with a local school/school district.
- Learn about the issues facing today's youth.
- Develop a meaningful relationship and lifelong friendship with a young person.
- Feel good about making a difference in the life of a student.
