Burlington Career Directions Center
What is it?
The
Career Directions Center (CDC) is a project of Linking Learning to Life. It
is located in Room B103 at Burlington High School. It has served as a resource
center for students, parents, teachers and community members since opening
its doors in August 1998. The Center contains books; videos, and computer
software designed to assist visitors in exploring careers, post secondary
options, job search strategies and transition planning. The Center is equipped
with eight computer stations; all are connected to the Internet. Staff at
the center work one-on-one with visitors to conduct research in careers and
education; write resumes; create student development portfolios; support students
with employment searches; complete the community service requirements, and
other activities related to preparing for a successful future. The Center
also welcomes small group visits for classroom activities.
Why is it Important?
The Center provides a safe and friendly environment for students to begin exploring
their future options. Thinking about careers is often confusing and even a
bit daunting. The resources and the staff provide students with the tools
they need to best prepare for success. With each contact, students are encouraged
and supported to take advantage of their educational opportunities at every
age in order to have a variety of possibilities when they graduate. Parents,
teachers and community members are also able to take advantage of Center resources
to support their students or to meet their own career needs.
