Program encourages students to stay in Vermont

The Lake Champlain Chamber of Commerce is launching a program next week to encourage students in high schools to remain in Vermont.

The program, dubbed Program to Inspire Leadership, Opportunity and Thought or PILOT, will begin Tuesday at the Inn at Essex.

Eighteen “latent leaders” were selected by teachers, guidance counselors, and school administrators to participate in the program. The students all high school juniors, are from Burlington, Champlain Valley Union and South Burlington high schools.

Participants will spend time learning about aspects of the community from organizations and professionals. Students will be matched with a business for career exploration and job shadowing, the chamber said.

Students will spend time at Fletcher Allen Health Care, Committee on Temporary Shelter, the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf and the Legislature in Montpelier, among other organizations.

A chamber release said it hopes to expand the program to more schools next year.
